In the late 1800's, a Bengali poet called Rabindranath Tagore published a book of poems titled Gitanjali. These poems are very well-known because they are so beautiful, heartfelt and moving. The book became hugely popular in India and across the world, with its stories transcending language barriers to be loved by cultures across the globe. One particular poem has recently been brought back into the limelight because there was an error in its original text which caused it to be misquoted incorrectly for decades after it was written. It is called 'Gitanjali' in English, but in Bengali it is called 'Jiboner Gani'. The story of the poem is that one day in Calcutta, Rabindranath received a manuscript from a friend whose name was Gitanjali. He thought the name was very beautiful so he wrote it down. These were all the more poignant as he wanted them to be more accurate and less misleading (he hoped more people would want to recite and learn more about the poem). The scholar Bhavna Mukhopadhyay had recently discovered a major error in Tagore's work thanks to this ambiguity of its original name. She said, "When I found out about this, I was shocked...It's not just me discovering one error. There are many errors in the original published Gitanjali. I have actually seen so many mistakes. I don't know how many people know about this, but I would urge them to correct them." The original title was given in Bengali.

The title of the film is derived from "Gitanjali", the famous collection of poems by Tagore published in 1883. The film opens with a quotation of "Gitanjali", which was written 9 years before the actual release of the film. The phrase also appears at several intervals throughout the movie, and even pays tribute to Tagore's poem with its very own song called 'Gitanjali' sung by Devraj Hans.
